Professor Tankiso Moloi, was born on 29 December 1981 in Nquthu, KwaZulu Natal. He matriculated in 1998 from Hlubi High School and  went on to study a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting & Economics at the University of South Africa. After completing his first qualification in 2003, Tankiso Moloi served as a trainee accountant at the University of South Africa. In April 2005, Tankiso Moloi started a new position at Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) – Local Government Financial Statistics as a Financial Economist. As his passion for academics grew he continued to grow in the Accountancy discipline and completed his Honours Bachelors of Commerce in Accounting in 2006 while also being promoted to the Senior Financial Economist at Stats SA. 

 

Where most of us would have been comfortable to get comfortable, Tankiso Moloi did not settle there and continued to strive. In January 2007 he was further promoted to Chief Financial Economist (Principle Survey Statistician) at Stats SA. In September 2007, Tankiso Moloi was recruited by Kumba Iron Ore (Anglo American) as their Chief Accountant for Integrated Risk Management while acquiring his Master of Science in Financial Management at the University of London which he completed in 2008 and completed his Master of Commerce in Accountancy at the University of South Africa in 2009. It was during this time when Tankiso Moloi was awarded the Old Mutual Chairman’s Plc. Scholarship for MSc Financial Management Studies at the University of London (2008) and was awarded the Certificate of Recognition of Exceptional Achievement by Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore Laurel Awards (2010). 

 

For Tankiso Moloi, this was just the beginning of many great achievements to come. In September 2011, he was further promoted to Chief Accountant for performance reporting at Kumba Iron Ore (Anglo American) while completing a Programme for Management Excellence (Management Delevopment Programme) at Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) in 2012 and became a Honoured member in the 2011/12 Stanford who’s who Black Book. As 2014 proved to be a great year as all Tankiso Moloi’s hard work paid off as he completed a Dual Degree: Doctor of Philosophy in Finance (PhD: Finance) at the Universidad Central de Nicaragua (UCN) and was awarded the Certificate of Recognition of Service by Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore. It was this great year, 2014, where Tankiso Moloi was appointed as the Ministerial Advisory Council on Energy Member (MACE) at the Department of Energy (July 2014 – June 2017). 

 

It was at this point, in February 2015, when Professor Tankiso Moloi allowed his passion for education to choose his path as he moved back to the place his journey started – The University of South Africa. He was appointed as the Professor of Financial Governance and completed the Academic Management Capacity Development Program in 2015. In August 2015 he was promoted as the Director of Enterprise Risk Management. 

 

In June 2016, Tankiso Moloi was appointed as ta Educational Committee Member (EDCOM) at the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) – (June 2016 – November 2018) and in September 2017 was appointed as the Chair of the Board of directors at Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology where he served from September 2017 to April 2018. In 2017, great reward came as Tankiso Moloi was admitted as a member by the Academic Union, Oxford. He was also the winner of the Best Paper Award in the 8th International Conference on Economic, Business and Social Sciences held in Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia, on the 15-16th Nov 2017 and the Winner of the Institute of Risk Management South Africa Industry Awards (Education category). 

 

In 2018, Tankiso Moloi was the Winner of the Institute of Risk Management South Africa Industry Awards (Education category), two years in a row and a Finalist in the Institute of Risk Management South Africa Industry Awards (Risk influencer of the year category).Furthermore he served as Audit and Risk Committee Member (ARC) at Sedibeng TVET College from March 2018 to April 2019. 

 

As Professor Tankiso Moloi’s journey started in 2003, 16 years later he has  received nothing but outstanding achievements and he is a great role model to the students and those around him. As he currently serves at the University of Johannesburg as the Professor of Accounting and Head of Postgraduate Studies and Accounting Research while also being a Visiting Professor for Fort Hays State University, Kansas and USA. As Professor Tankiso Moloi continues to show that one can never stop learning, he continues with a qualification in progress at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT Sloan) in Programme in Artificial Intelligence. 

 

In his 16 year journey, he now holds the professional qualifications and memberships of IRMSA, CRA and CIMA. As Professor Tankiso Moloi’s journey continues, we look forward to learning and growing with him.
